Meet AirPay: pay the people around you by name

AirPay lets you pay the shops and people around you by name: no account number to read out, no QR code to hunt for. Here’s how it works.

Most payments here start with a number. One person reads out a fourteen-digit account number, the other types it in, and both hope nothing was misheard. Or the QR code is faded, missing, or somewhere behind the queue.

AirPay starts with something you already know: who you’re paying.

How a payment works

  1. Discover. Open AirPay in the Dashen Super App. Eligible shops and people near you appear by name.
  2. Select. Tap the one you mean. Their name and masked account number appear before anything else.
  3. Pay. Enter the amount, check the details and approve with your PIN. You get a receipt every time.

That’s the whole flow. The only thing you type is the amount.

No digits to read out, nothing to look up. Just the name of who you’re paying.

Shops and people, on one radar

The same radar finds the shop you’re standing in and the friend beside you. Paying at the mini market and settling up after dinner work the same way: tap the name, enter the amount, approve.

Two cafés in one building? Both appear by name, and you pick the one you’re sitting in.

You stay in control

AirPay doesn’t change who approves a payment: you do. Every shop and person appears with a masked account number. You see the amount and the recipient on one screen, and nothing moves until you confirm with your PIN, with the same security you already rely on.

For shops: nothing extra at the counter

Shops join AirPay through StarPay, the merchant payment network. There’s no QR sticker to keep clean, no stand and no extra hardware. Customers nearby find the shop by name, and the shop gets paid through StarPay.

What you need

  • The Dashen Super App, with AirPay open.
  • Location turned on.
  • The shop or person you’re paying needs the same, so you can find each other.

Only eligible shops and people with AirPay open can be found, so the radar shows who you can actually pay.

Who’s behind AirPay

AirPay is developed and owned by Eagle Lion System Technology in Addis Ababa. It launched first in the Dashen Super App in October 2026, and it is protected by a patent from the Ethiopian Intellectual Property Authority.
